Which off-season suits you best?

Off-season in Grainau doesn't just mean less hustle and bustle. It gives you the opportunity to choose a Zugspitze region that suits your interests.

In winter, skiing, cross-country skiing, and snow-covered trails take center stage. From May onwards, it's time for hiking and cycling. Autumn brings crisp mountain air, colorful forests, and ideal conditions for active days in the valley.

This makes camping in Bavaria during the off-season a conscious travel decision.

November and December: The start of winter in the mountains

From November 9th to December 17th, 2026, the landscape around Grainau will change. The first snow will fall on the peaks. In the valley, the mornings will become colder and the first winter sports activities will begin.

Depending on snow conditions and when the lifts open, you can already go skiing on the Zugspitze . Germany's highest ski resort is located on the Zugspitzplatt plateau. From Grainau, you can take the cogwheel train and the connecting path via the Eibsee to the top.

Even without skiing, there's plenty to experience during this time of year. Grainau offers groomed winter hiking trails . When there's sufficient snow, the cross-country ski trails in the valley also open, including an illuminated night trail.

Camping in November is therefore a good choice if you want to experience the transition from late autumn to winter. Some days are still for hiking boots, while on others there's already snow at the foot of the Zugspitze.

February and March: Skiing on the Zugspitze

The periods from February 5th to 14th and from March 19th to April 4th, 2027 fall within the winter sports season.

High-alpine slopes and sweeping views of the surrounding peaks await you on the Zugspitze. Grainau often still has wintry conditions in February. In March and early April, milder days can already begin in the valley, while skiing remains possible at the summit.

It is precisely this contrast that makes the travel time interesting.

You can spend one day on the slopes and the next day go winter hiking in the valley. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also among the options around Grainau when conditions are right.

May and June: Spring camping in Bavaria

From May 14th to June 30th, 2027, the days will be long. Around our camping resort, everything will turn green, while snowfields may still be visible on the high peaks.

Now is the time for hiking and cycling. You can cycle through the Loisach Valley, explore the trails around Grainau, or plan a tour in the Wetterstein Mountains. The hiking options range from easy loops to challenging mountain tours.

Lake Eibsee is also a must-see during this time of year. In the morning, the light filters through the wooded shores, and later, along the circular path, views of the water and mountains open up again and again.

Camping in Bavaria in spring combines long days outdoors with a landscape that changes almost daily.

September to November: Grainau in autumn

From September 14th to November 7th, 2027, autumn is part of our off-season.

The forests around Grainau are changing color. The air is getting cooler. On clear days, the view extends far beyond the Wetterstein Mountains.

These weeks are ideal for walks in the Loisach Valley, bike rides, and hikes at moderate altitudes. Garmisch-Partenkirchen , the Wank mountain, and the trails around the town also offer a variety of options.

Autumn has its own rhythm. In September, the days are often still long. At the end of October and the beginning of November, the mornings start later and the evenings become cooler.
